PSYCHOSTIMULANT PROTOCOL

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prescription drug abuse is a growing epidemic in the U.S. The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs has increased significantly in the past decade. Prescription drug related deaths now exceed those from illicit drugs including heroin, cocaine, hypnotics and stimulants combined (1).

The DEA, SAMSA and Office of National Drug Control Policy have made this issue a priority and are dedicated to the reduction of diversion and illicit use of prescription medications.

Dr. Muir's offices follow strict psychostimulant protocols in support of the agencies' objective to reduce and cease the abuse of prescription medications.

If you believe you have ADD/ADHD and wish to be evaluated or are transferring care from another provider for continued management of these disorders, please take note of Dr. Muir's stimulant protocol.

1. Previous provider (i.e. primary care provider, pediatrician) medical records, grade school report cards and/or past neuropsychological testing.

2. If you have never been tested or have any of your past grade school reports, Dr. Muir recommends comprehensive testing by a neuropsychologist. She recommends Dr. Martin Eaton (Ph.D.) at Well Street Psychological Group. He may be reached at 949-262-0333 to schedule an appointment. Ask him to fax the results to Dr. Muir at 949-313-1040. Then call us back to schedule an appointment for a medication evaluation.

3. A reevaluation to determine if Dr. Muir's assessment concurs with the previous provider's diagnosis.

4. Close monitoring of weight and BMI (body mass index) due to the appetite suppressant properties of psychostimulants and their misuse for weight loss.

5. Initial and maintenance EKG and blood pressure monitoring due to increase cardiovascular risks.

6. Initial and random urine toxicology drugs of abuse screens

7. If you have chronic pain issues and have been prescribed (but not limited to) oxycontin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, Vicodin, Norco, Soma, Robaxin, Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax, Valium, Dr. Muir recommends that your psychiatric care be managed by a multidisciplinary team for a holistic approach and collaborative effort towards your mental and medical healthcare needs.

8. No early refills requests

9. Monthly office visits. Stimulants are Schedule I substances and cannot be called in to the pharmacy. Therefore, you must present to your appointment for a security triplicate.

10. These appointments are not applicable to Dr. Muir's telepsychiatry services.

11. If you have a history of drug abuse, eating disorder, seizure disorder, cardiovascular events (stroke, heart disease), stimulants are not recommended.
